District Governor, 2019 – 2020
Rtn Ajay Agarwal belongs to a reputed Agarwal family of Kolkata which publishes Daily Vishwamitra, the oldest Hindi
newspaper now in its 105th year of publication. He has written numerous articles in leading publications in India and abroad. Apart from the publishing business, he has had involvement in real estate development, and also in newsprint imports and sales.
Born and brought up in this city, he did his schooling in St Xaviers Collegiate School, Kolkata and completed B.Com Hons from St Xaviers College, Calcutta. He was a school topper and was awarded National Scholarship by government of India.
He was introduced into Rotary Club of Central Calcutta in 1988, and went on to quickly serve as secretary in 1989-90, and president in 1992-93. His presidential year was capped with 15 awards from the district.
In 1993-94, he took charge of both district directory as well as GML. During later years, he took numerous District, Zonal and International positions, such as: Civic Affairs, Interact, Group Study Exchange, Inter City Meets. GSE has been a passion with him, and he chaired this committee 4 times. It was only natural that he became Group Study Exchange leader in 2006, and visited Hong Kong, Macau and Mongolia, the latter country receiving a GSE team for the first time.
The District Conference in 2004 saw him chairing this event, and taking it to great heights. With exceptional speakers, entertainment and food, it still stands out in the memory of the Rotarians.
As Assistant Governor in 2007-2008, and again in 2008-2009, he forged close bonds with many clubs and guided them in their affairs.
When he was asked to publish proceedings papers for a number of international conferences, he undertook the task with usual care. The Rotary Institutes, Presidential Water Conference, and other zonal events were covered by him.
Through the many years of his service to Rotary he has been a faculty for district training programs like PETS and SETS many times. The RLI program in the district features him regularly as a speaker. He has also been a keynote speaker at various programs in neighbouring districts.
He is presently a member of Rotary Club of Calcutta Millennium, which was chartered in 2016.In the course of his journey since 1988, he has introduced more than 65 members into Rotary.
His spouse Mamta is a senior Inner Wheel leader. She was President, Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India (20152016). Both are Major Donors to TRF. They are blessed with a daughter, Aashika who is married to Sudhir, and a son, Atishay, who is married to Nidhi
